The need

A photographer working across food, hotels and interiors needs to establish a clear specialism while giving the imagery room to speak. The website had to connect a recognisable introduction, portfolio browsing and an enquiry journey.

The work

I handled project management, design and development. An image-led opening connects to separate Food, Drink, Hospitality & Interiors, People, Books and Publications sections. An English introduction, navigation and contact details support the journey from first impression to a selection of work.

The project outcome

The live website documents the full journey: homepage, themed portfolios and contact form. Food and Hospitality demonstrate the same system across two subjects, with links to other collections. The photography is Andrea Di Lorenzo’s work; my contribution is the website.

Inside the project

From positioning to selection

The homepage introduces the photographer; categories let a restaurant or hotel find relevant work.

From portfolio to enquiry

Email, phone and a form provide a next step after viewing the work.

Interfaces and visual decisions

Large sans serif headings and a distinctive red menu establish a restrained framework. Dark gallery backgrounds give the portfolio photographs room to provide their own colour.

Composition and usage

Photography leads

The opening centres an image and a clear specialism. Collections separate the photographer’s areas of work.

One scale, three levels

Headings scale from 2.5 to 7 rem, section titles from 1.5 to 2.125 rem and body text from 0.9375 to 1.125 rem, adapting to screen width.

A navigation anchor

The red menu remains recognisable across images and collections. End-of-page links invite visitors into another subject.

The name becomes a point of orientation.

In a photographic portfolio, navigation needs to leave room for the work and remain recognisable when needed. I brought Andrea Di Lorenzo’s initials into a compact sign: A above, D and L below, with an asterisk in the fourth space.

The monogram serves as both signature and control. On hover, the asterisk becomes three lines; when opened, the initials expand into the full name. The element identifying the photographer also reveals the portfolio sections, keeping one consistent graphic language.

Motion makes the relationship between the compact sign and the person it represents visible. Menu entries gather above the name, leaving the surrounding page room to breathe.

Open and close the monogram. The entries are shown as a specimen and do not navigate to other pages.
